Grief Counseling

The Caring House was founded in 1993 as a program of Hospice Family Care, Madison County’s only not-for-profit hospice provider. After receiving a grant in May 1994 and special training at the Dougy Center (National Center for Grieving Children and Families), The Caring House opened its doors in 1995.

When a family member or close friend dies, it is a frightening disruption in the lives of both children and adults. Death changes the way the entire family unit functions. Sometimes children and teens become “the forgotten mourners.”

The Caring House provides a safe place for youth ages 3-18 and their families to cope with the death of a loved one and share their grief experiences with others.

We recognize that grief is a natural reaction to the loss of a loved one – for children as well as adults. The duration and intensity of grief is unique for each individual. Within each of us is the natural capacity to heal, and acceptance and caring facilitate that healing process.
