Health Occupation Students Association

  • The Medical Professions Society is part of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), which is a national organization. This organization is for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. We emphasize leadership, community service, and health career awareness. We participate in various activities throughout the year which benefit the community. Some of these are: Operation Christmas Child, fundraising for St. Judes' Children’s Research Hospital, collecting tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham, and collecting coloring books and crayons for the pediatric units at Children’s Hospital and Huntsville Hospital Women and Children's. We also participate in HOSA's competitive events competition. Students compete in over 60 medically related knowledge and skill events on the local, state and national levels. Some of the events are: Medical Terminology, Dental Spelling, 1st Aid/CPR, Pathophysiology Knowledge Test, Veterinary Assisting, Sports Medicine and HOSA Bowl. Meetings are held monthly usually before school (to be announced via SHS TV and morning announcements). The yearly fee is $40.
